Their problems can't and won't be solved by giving them a free meal or some loose change. To truly help, people need to invest time and often a good dose of their own lives. Many folks don't even want to acknowledge their existence, let alone lend a helping hand. If you haven't read it already, I would highly recommend the book "Under the Overpass". Two college students lived on the streets on several major cities in the U.S. and wrote about their experience.
