Jeff Harris is a hero

Jeff Harris was not going to be the topic of my blog today. Nope. The original blog was going to be about how helping a friend made me move a plant because in helping him move he bequeathed me with new plants and in finding a place for his plants amidst my plants I had to move a plant and in moving that plant... a flower bloomed.

But that was the original topic of this blog.

And then, I saw a tweet from the Huffington Post and watched the video it directed me to and I was so taken and moved and stirred and inspired by what I saw, I realized...

I have to share this in the hopes that you too will watch it and be taken and moved and stirred and inspired by what you see.

I'm not going to use any words to describe Jeff Harris and his project to take a photo of himself everyday for 13 years and counting. I'm going to let him speak for himself. He does it well. He does it spectacularly. He is a hero.

Breathtaking! An incredible concept, determination to follow thru, and a heart-touching story. I was spell-bound, and found myself wondering what a photo review of the last ten years of my life would look like.

It's fascinating to me how many photographers have undertaken projects like Harris's. A woman I know just completed 365 portraits of herself.

The cancer-related photographs in the video are courageous and I think go a long way to help demystify what it is like to experience and deal with the disease. A friend of mine with glioblastoma has taken videos of her treatments and been very open in sharing her experience. Both she and Harris are to be commended.

He certainly is ... {a hero}!

looking at oneself in a photograph gives a person a way of looking at the self that is different than anything before photography. it is a fairly realistic view that is hard to imagine.

I've got to ask: WHY do you think he is a *hero*? There have been countless other photographers who have taken up similar work, both before and after Harris started his. So what makes him so special?

Hi Tendim -- I like your question. He is a hero to me because what he did takes courage and creativity and a willingness to share.

The others are heroes too -- I just don't know of their stories. I think they are all special though if they have have had the courage to commit to their work and express it.

Thanks for visiting! I appreciate your presence.
